Nowadays, it is much faster and easier to get to Koh Tao, than earlier. island is located around 85 kilometers away from Chumphon port, 45 km from Koh Phangan, 65 km from Koh Samui, and 120 km from Suratthani. thus most travelers choose to start from Chumphon, where they could board large speedboat to the island within 2 hours. Some sea transportation companies even make it easier to go there by including the bus trip from Bangkok to Chumphon into the program. by this way it is much faster and easier to get to Koh Tao

Suratthani possesses an island that is most marvelous for both skin diving and scuba diving, that island is Koh Tao. The tiny Thai island of Koh Tao provides great diving in all of south East Asia and is most popular. Koh Tao has the shape of kidney bean, for there is a large bay curved into the land in western side, which is comprise by two islands i.e. Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan. Koh Tao means turtle Island because in the past the waters teemed with sea turtles. Nowadays they have moved on to new breeding grounds since travelers and tourists enjoy Koh Tao’s beaches instead.

It covers an area of about 21 km, Koh Tao is located about 70 km east of the coastline between Suratthani and Chumphon, in the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Tao translates as Turtle Island.

In the beginning, the island was uninhabited, and only the occasional fisherman from the neighbouring islands came by to seek shelter from a storm. On June 18, 1899, His Majesty the King Chulalongkorn (Rama V , 1868-1910) visited Koh Tao and left as evidence his monogram on a huge boulder at Jor Por Ror Bay next to Sairee Beach. This place is still worshipped today and should be treated with respect. From 1933 on the island was used as a political prison because of it’s far distance from the mainland. In 1947, Khun A -Paiwong, Prime Minister at that time, pleaded and received a royal pardon for all prisoners on the island. Everybody was taken back to the mainland and the “Turtle” was abandoned once again.

By Car
Take Phuttamonton Road (Nakorn Pathom – Phetburi), or Thonburi – Pak Tor route (high – way 35), then get into highway 4 (Phetkasaem Road) at around Pak Tor Intersection. Pass Phetburi and Phrachuab Khiri Khan until you reach Pathomphon Intersection. Turn left into Chumphon Town along highway 4001, you will find Tha Yang Port and Ao Makham Noi Port. You can park the car there (car-care service available) and get the boat to Koh Tao.

By Bus
From Southern Bus Terminal, there are air-conditioned buses from Bangkok to Chumphon everyday. The journey takes around 7 hours. Then continue with minibus, or the transportation of the boat companies, to the port.

By Train
There are trains from Bangkok to Chumphon everyday, and the journey takes around 8 hours.

Koh Tao at night can be surprisingly exciting and if you like to party all night long you’ve come to the right place.

Well designed flyers all around keep you up to date. The happy crowd never gets tired & basically there is a cool party somewhere every night; no matter what moon is up. Koh Tao has a remarkably Fuzzy nightlife. As the sun dips after a hard day it’s time for sun downer on the beach. Most of the major dance places on the island are right on the beach. There is something going on every night. The Full, Half and Black Moon parties also take place in Koh Tao.

To find out what’s up look out for advertising at shops and taxis. But basically there is a rave going on somewhere every night. The established and famous Full, Half and Black Moon parties are in particular recommended and are as god, if not better, than in Samui or Phangan.

There are also a few pub-like venues that show movies and sports, as well as have pool tables. The very few beer bars have their usual temptations, but like everywhere else may involve financial & health risks.

Scuba Diving : Your scuba adventure starts here at Koh Tao. Koh Tao provides great diving in all of south east Asia and is most popular, and is one of the top 10 place for diving site. Koh Tao has loads of beach dive sites, but 2 major dive sites are shark island and southwest pinnacle. both are exceptional sites with great variety of reef fish and alluring rocky formations, maximum depth 32m.

Shopping: You can get nearly everything you need right one in Koh Tao. Around the island are plenty of supermarkets, open from early morning until 10:30pm, and though they offer less variety than the mainland, the essentials can be found and bought for bargain prices. Except in the big stores you can try to haggle the price, but always remember to be friendly and reasonable. Original ethnic souvenirs made from ceramic, coconut, shells or bamboo and unique jewelry made from silver, leather and precious stones are offered in several shops as well as from vendors at the roadside.
